Plant breeding activity has to be considered in the context of the agricultural system. The organic agriculture (OA) is more than a way of production: it is consistent with an ethics of the place and role of the man in the nature. Working for OA means to prefer a holistic approach with a ecological vision of the plant and animal in their environment to an analytic approach with a biochemical vision of the living beings. The variety plays at least two roles in the organic way of production: (i) an ecological adaptation of the crop and the keeping of the environment equilibrium in the planting, (ii) a valorisation of products from a soil and a savoir-faire. Organic Agriculture is especially affected by the increasing spread of stem rust in rye (Puccinia graminis f. sp. secalis) because there is a lack of resistant cultivars in Germany. To analyze the virulence situation of rye stem rust, 71 single-pustule-isolates were established and 30 of those were tested with a differential set consisting of 19 lines. The isolates could be classified into 22 different pathotypes. Only seven pathotypes could be found more than once. Most of the isolates showed a complexity of five virulences. In a preliminary analysis a Simpson index of 0,98 was found indicating a high level of diversity of German stem rust populations. Nine of 19 tested lines reacted fully resistant in seedling stage. Wie bereits 2001 hat der Ökoring Schleswig-Holstein auch in diesem Jahr Komplettuntersuchungen von Rohproteingehalten und essentiellen Aminosäuren über SALVANA bei der Degussa durchführen können. Jochen Hochmann, Landwirtschaftskammer Schleswig-Holstein, hat Proben aus dem diesjährigen Öko-Erbsenversuch am Lehr- und Versuchszentrum Futterkamp zur Verfügung gestellt. Zu erkennen ist, dass in diesem Jahr die Rohproteingehalte im Vergleich zum Vorjahr deutlich niedriger ausfallen. Es kann im Mittel von ca. 2% geringeren Rohproteingehalten ausgegangen werden. Because of the interdiction of chemical seed treatment, smut resistance is a main demand for cultivation of winter barley in organic farming. A comparison of common high yielding varieties with those chosen particularly with regard to good smut-resistance or tolerance showed no significant differences in field performance under the conditions of organic farming. Main criteria were the yield of grain and the content of protein and most important amino acids for animal nutrition (Cystine, Lysine, Me-thionine, Threonine, Tryptophan). Wheat genetic resources may be grown in organic farming systems or in less favourable areas for bread wheat species. Characteristics of hulled wheat species (23 varieties of einkorn, emmer wheat, spelt wheat) were studied and evaluated within a two-year trial period (which was executed on certified organic fields) and they were compared to characteristics of landraces and modern bread wheat varieties. 15 wheat and 4 spelt varieties suitable for ecological farming have been cultivated and tested for susceptibility to common bunt of wheat (T. caries). The 2-years randomized field trials have been carried out at 1 site, with 4 replicates and 10 m row length on naturally infested fields with T. caries. Sowing, weed control and harvesting was done by hand. The number of infested ears has been counted and the number of spores per kernel or spelt has been determined according ISTA. Eine wichtige Anpassung an den ökologischen Anbau ist eine zügige Frühentwicklung und ein Wurzelsystem, das an organische Düngung angepasst ist. Eine Halbdiallelkreuzung aus insgesamt 20 europäischen Winterweizensorten wurde 2001 hergestellt und insgesamt drei Subpopulationen aus neun Hochertragseltern (CY), eine mit 12 Backqualitätseltern (CQ) und eine aus allen Eltern (CYQ) zusammengestellt. Seit der F5 wird Saatgut unter konventionellen und ökologischen Anbaubedingungen in jeweils zwei parallelen Populationen getrennt nachgebaut. Saat jeder Generation wird bei -20o C aufbewahrt.
